Dear Maharajas, Prabhus and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
All glories to HH Gopal Krsna Gosvami.
I was struck with great sadness when I heard the news of the passing of HH Gopal Krsna Goswami from this material world. I first served under him in 1977 when he was the GBC for the Hyderabad temple. I also recall that in the late 1970s and early 1980s that some envious persons would make disparaging remarks about him, but those critics fell into oblivion while his star grew ever brighter.
As chairman of the Bureau for ISKCON India he played an instrumental part in the expansion or Lord Caitanya’s mission in India. He was also a BBT trustee who vigorously pushed book publication and distribution. His temples were often on the top spot for book distribution.
Speaking of temples when Srila Prabhupada left the planet the ISKCON temple in Delhi was a small rented building in Lajpatnagar and this was still the case in 1983 when I left India to return to the West. The Delhi temple then had little facility and most devotees would stay in a hotel and eat at restaurants or bypass Delhi and go straight to Braja. So I was astounded when I returned to Delhi 20 years later in 2003 to find the huge Sri-Sri Radha Parthasarthi Mandir complex. In total HH Gopal Krsna Maharaja has erected 17 wonderful temples in the Delhi National Capitol Region more than making up for the humble start.
But it was in 2007 that HH Gopal Krsna Swami’s true colors were exposed. My wife and I had come to Delhi to get her a visa to Canada and on the day before Janmastami we were involved in a horrendous car accident on the way to Vrndavana suffering catastrophic injuries. Hari Sauri Prabhu informed Maharaja of our plight. Maharaja came to visit us in the hospital several times. He then shifted us to a room in the Delhi temple guest house and arranged for a team of his disciples to wait on us hand and foot — not for a few weeks but 11 months! It took that long because we had to learn how to walk again and go through extensive physiotherapy. My mother told me that no one would have been able to provide the kind of care that Gopal Krsna Swami provided for us. I also recall that doctor Nijjara who was treating us remarked that the temples Maharaja had built along with the millions of books distributed in the Delhi region was having a profound effect on the consciousness of the nation.
So while Maharaja was a “big man” he had a very soft heart and went out of his way to take care of devotees. My wife and I are eternally grateful for what he did for us in our weakest moment and greatest need. This quote from a text I wrote on Dandavatas at the time expresses our sentiment:
We would be remiss if we did not give our deepest thanks to HH Gopal Krsna Gosvami and the devotees of Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi Mandira who all personified the mercy and compassion of the Lord. Maharaja was always inquiring about our welfare and had his disciples wait on us hand and foot in our helpless condition. It is no exaggeration to say that our survival and recovery is largely due to their loving care for us. And it was not short term care but it went on for months, we came to Delhi for a 9 day trip and stayed for 10 months in their care. Never once were we made to feel that we were a burden or inconvenience to them which would have made us feel depressed. Rather we always felt lucky to be in the association of so many genuinely kind souls. It is impossible to repay this debt but we will try as best we can.
My wife and I pray that Sri-Sri Radha Parthasarathi take good care of HH Gopal Krsna Gosvami as he justly deserves.

In Delhi, every morning, when Guru Maharaj would use the bathroom and get ready, a team of a dozen new, yellow-clad devotees would come in and clean his room under the direction of one of Guru Maharaj’s servants. One time, a few of these new devotees did some things wrong and were not cleaning properly, so the servant raised his voice a little and began chastising them sternly. At that time, Damodara Gaura Hari Prabhu was assisting Guru Maharaj in a different room. The stern voice of his servant was barely audible in that room, but of course Guru Maharaj heard everything. Guru Maharaj leaned over to Damodara Gaura Hari Prabhu and said gently, “You see, these devotees have left everything, their homes and their families, to live and serve at the temple. If we speak with them harshly, how will they feel? We should not deal harshly with them.” Hearing this, Damodara Gaura Hari Prabhu had tears in his eyes, thinking how humble, kind, and compassionate Guru Maharaj is to all the devotees. Guru Maharaj health was not good and had so many managerial problems to handle, yet he was concerned about the spiritual lives of these new yellow-clad bhaktas who had recently joined the temple. Guru Maharaj taught the new devotees to be humble and submissive to the senior devotees. Simultaneously, he taught the senior devotees to develop empathy, patience, and large-heartedness toward the junior devotees. Such is the love of Lord Nityananda’s personal associates!
One of Guru Maharaj’s Russian disciples was unloading a truck full of books when a large pallet fell on her, crushing her and leaving her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Guru Maharaj was crying as he recounted this story to the devotees in Delhi. He spoke about her selfless service and sacrifice, sharing how she would go out in sub-freezing Siberian weather to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books. Guru Maharaj's love for his devotees runs very deep. I only saw him raise his voice twice. Once, after the Radha Parthasarathi Temple had opened and before the Mayapur festival, thousands of devotees were passing through Delhi on their way to Mayapur. Guru Maharaj had personally asked a Russian devotee to stand at the entrance of the temple to welcome any Russian devotees who didn’t speak English or Hindi and to assist them. After an hour, this devotee went somewhere, leaving the arriving Russian devotees without help. Guru Maharaj sent out a team to find him. When he returned, Guru Maharaj, who by this time was standing at the temple gate himself, shouted, “Where did you go? I told you to stand here. These devotees only speak Russian, and we cannot serve them properly without a translator!” This devotee was taken aback. Then, in a softer tone, he added, “You see, my heart cries when I see devotees suffer." Feeling that this devotee may have felt hurt, Guru Maharaj called him to his room in the evening and spoke with him at length. The second time I saw Guru Maharaj raise his voice was in Mayapur, when he chastised a leader for mistreating the devotees at his temple.
In March 2002, Guru Maharaj was in Mayapura for GBC meetings and festivals. Thousands of devotees from around the world were there for the Mayapura festival, including HH Tamal Krishna Maharaj. Guru Maharaj, Tamal Krishna Maharaj, HH Sridhar Maharaj, and HH Bhakti Caru Maharaj were all staying in the Conch building. Tamal Krishna Maharaj held nightly kirtans in his room, and the sound of the divine kirtan resonated throughout the building. Guru Maharaj was busy making phone calls, attending meetings, and meeting devotees. Occasionally, he would step outside his room to hear the kirtan while peering over the temple courtyard. He would say, “The kirtan is very nice. If you want to attend the kirtan, you can go there.” However, Tamal Krishna Maharaj’s room was always full with devotees, so we would listen from outside Guru Maharaj’s room. After the GBC meetings ended, on March 15, Tamal Krishna Maharaj left Mayapura to return to Cambridge, where he had just completed his PhD, to attend his graduation ceremony. On the way to Kolkata, the Tata Sumo SUV carrying Tamal Krishna Maharaj to the airport collided with a tree, and Maharaj instantaneously left this world to join Srila Prabhupada. Guru Maharaj was the first to receive the news. Upon hearing the fateful news, Guru Maharaj slowly sat on his bed in utter silence and began weeping. He wept and wept like a child who had lost his elder brother. Guru Maharaj generally always hid his spiritual emotions. I had never seen him sobbing so much. In the following days, the senior devotees shared their offerings and memories of Tamal Krishna Maharaj. Guru Maharaj was requested to speak. While all the other speakers sat on the vyasasana and spoke for at least 10 minutes, Guru Maharaj did not sit on the vyasasana. He stood and spoke one sentence, very loudly and forcefully: “I am convinced, without a doubt, that Srila Tamal Krishna Maharaj came from the spiritual world to assist Srila Prabhupada in his mission.” The entire audience was thunderstruck. No one had said this, and with such conviction. Clearly, Guru Maharaj was seeing something that perhaps one a few others could see. After Guru Maharaj entered Samadhi, HG Malati Prabhu similarly said, “I am certain that Srila Gopal Krishna Goswami Maharaj was sent by Krishna to help Srila Prabhupada in his mission.” Alas, if only we had realized a little earlier how exalted is our beloved Guru Maharaj, who saves us from this material existence.
Dear Devotees
Hare Krsna. Please accept my most respectful obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! All glories to His Divine Grace’s confidential most intimate servant, His Holiness Gopal Krsna Goswami
As the news of his divine disappearance begins to deeply enter our consciousness, we grieve in separation from this extraordinary servant of Srila Prabhupada - His Holiness Sripada Gopal Krsna Goswami Maharaja.
I was causelessly blessed to be his servant and, during Srila Prabhupada’s manifest Lila, I was allowed into a close spiritual friendship with Maharaja. His disappearance becomes overwhelming as we contemplate and remember his pastimes and his unique devotional service in establishing ISKCON and the BBT and book distribution and sacred temples with permanently installed Deities within India. He was named by Srila Prabhupada to be GBC, BBT trustee and Executor of Prabhupad’s Last Will. He was practically always in a state of samadhi-like love and focus on Srila Prabhupada CONSTANTLY- I saw this from the day we first met up until his disappearance.
He is eternally a great Sankirtana General in Srila Prabhupada’s Sankirtana Army, and I share the prayer of so many thousands of devotees in wishing one day to again be and remain in his presence and his association - for wherever he is, absorbed remembrance and trance-like focus on and service to Srila Prabhupada permeates the atmosphere
To my dear friend, who mercifully allowed me to serve you, I will always miss you in many many ways, as I aspire to follow in the footsteps of your lotus feet.
Your aspriring servant forever,Rameshwara das
